Update on Lori Gans - Part Two

Dear Family and Friends,

Lori has been admitted to the hospital. The good news is that her kidneys are fine. The bad news is that the liver produces an enzyme which causes the kidneys to remove excess fluid from the body. Lori's liver has stopped producing this enzyme which has caused the problem.

On the good side of things, she was out of the waiting room and moved to the back of the ER in 20 minutes from coming in the front door. Also on the good side of things, she was seen by the chief of staff, who apparently is familiar with this type of case, and seemed to know exactly what to do. Jennifer is very pleased with how they treated Lori, and feels Lori is in good hands now.

The hospital has made arrangements for the liver specialist (whom Lori was supposed to see on the 16th) to see her in the morning at the hospital. While going to the hospital is never a good thing, in this case, it may be good in that Lori is going to see him a lot sooner than she was supposed to.

Our phones have been ringing off the hook, so please folks - don't call. We know you all mean well, but we're getting the information out as soon as we know, and we aren't holding any info back. Jennifer has been up for more than 30 hours now, and we're all in similar shape. We will
always be sending the latest info out through the email.

Saddest News - Melonie Schollmeyer

I don't even know how to write this. We are all so very sad. Melonie Schollmeyer, a vibrant woman, our relative and friend, became suddenly ill over the weekend and passed away. Details at this point are sketchy. **(The following is updated info as of noon Monday)** Melonie's children, Brittany and Robert, just had their Confirmation on Saturday evening. Melonie was not feeling well enough to attend, and stayed at home with flu-like symptoms. Afterward the children, Mary, and Cheryl all visited with Mel before going taking the children to spend the night with Tom. The next day Cheryl and Mary could not raise Melonie by telephone and so asked Tom to go see how she was doing. He did so (thankfully the children stayed in the car) and found Melonie had passed away in the bedroom. The Medical Examiner's Office is doing an autopsy to determine the cause of death. Edith Admitted to Hospital Again

Rick reports that his mom had been overdosed on Coumidin - an extremely dangerous anticoagulant drug - and also had an infection going on. Long story short, she is no longer at the physical rehab facility. She has been admitted again back into the hospital where both situations are hopefully being remedied, and she has the love and support of us all. Auntie Edith, hang in there, we all love you!!

Fast Update on Tom Tate

Dad did finally receive a tracheostomy yesterday, so that tube is gone out of his mouth and now sprouts from his chest. They tried to put the feeding tube down his nose but it keeps clogging up so today [or tomorrow] they will insert a port into his stomach... Later today or tomorrow we will start a search of local specialty hospitals that might have the criteria to care for Dad after his discharge from the ICU. I am headed for the hospital now, so please forgive the brevity of this post. Hugs to all, and thank you again for all your prayers. Susan P.S. I am printing out all the wonderful comments to the blog and also the emails I've received from so many, and taking them to Mom to read.
