Heavenly Music

AAAh, the Opera. It was Wonderful. The music was fantastic (we were in the third row from the orchestra pit) and the sets were absolutely beautiful. The performers were dressed perfectly for the parts, and their voices were... well, heavenly. There were a few scenes where the whole cast was singing, an outstanding choir. And the solo scenes by the main players were nothing short of passionate, beautiful, and flawlessly sung, every note a pleasure to hear.

The two stories of Il Tabarro and Pagliacci are very similar -- and very dark (love triangle, hubby is outraged and murders wife and/or lover). I used to think all the unfaithful wives and aggressive women portrayed by Hollywood was just Hollywood male writers with wishful thinking, but these are not new operas. I see that Hollywood didn't start the trend of entertainment being love triangles and blaming it all on the woman. Perhaps I led an extremely sheltered life, but all the women I have ever known never behaved this way. The NEXT generation, however, seems to be another story... and that's another blog!

After the opera we went out to eat at Black Angus... Dad's favorite place. Everyone filled up on appetizers and ended up taking half the meal home in boxes! But it was great, and David/Loni got everyone to try appetizers they wouldn't have otherwise tried. It was a special evening to honor the two special people who shared it with us, Nick and Aunt Mary. Hopefully it will be a memory each will cherish. Aunt Mary enjoyed the music immensely although she was disappointed she couldn't understand the Italian better. She speaks a southern dialect and they were singing in 'high' Italian. I told her not to worry, it's difficult to understand all the words even when it's sung in English. Nick liked the opera so well he wants to come back to town to see The Consul ! So big KUDOS to Dave and Loni for a wonderful day and evening. It was a great gift all will remember.
