Edith Hern and Ethel Moore
Monday was a weird day for two people close to our family - Aunt Edith (Tate) Hern, and Ethel Moore - a very close family friend for decades. These two ladies are the same age, but live in two different states. They've known each other for 50 years or more but have not seen each other in a couple of decades at least. Aunt Edith now lives in Missouri near her son Rick Tate; Ethel Moore lives in Israel but has been in Arizona visiting her daughter Janice Weston for the past couple of months.
On Monday, in both Missouri and Arizona, the scene played out like this: Each woman was taken by family members to a doctor for what they thought/hoped would be a fairly routine visit. Each one was told by the doctor that she needed to be admitted immediately to the Hospital. Each was sent to the local Hospital where they were NOT admitted immediately because there were no beds available; rather they each waited about a day and a half in the Emergency Room till a bed was available!
The stories have bittersweet endings: both ladies are now at home with their families. Ethel is still having problems but seems to be slowly improving. The medications or something seems to be interfering with her memory, and she is still very unsteady on her feet, but there is hope for the future. She was given a walker but at home is somewhat successfully trying to walk around just holding on to furniture and walls. Gloria has flown in from her home in Kansas to stay with their mom while her sister Janice is at work during the days. To send a get well card, please address it to:

Edith was not allowed to return to her own home as she was diagnosed with congestive heart failure, chronic kidney disease, some sort of pulmonary dysfunction, and severe diabetes. She was discharged into Rick's care and will now be living at his home, on a very strict diet, 24 hour oxygen, and medications. She has to use a walker to ambulate. They cannot give her dialysis due to her heart condition, so they are trying to manage the kidney failure with medications, but it is debatable as to how successful that will be. Everyone's prayers are with both these wonderful women who have played a large part in our lives. We love you both.

Thank you so much for keeping us all posted about Ethel and Aunt Edith latest health issues. Both these great ladies are such a large part of our lives.
I remember as a little kid sitting on the floor in Aunt Edith's living room and happily "braiding" the fringe all around her sofa ... and eating dinner at Ethel's house where, no matter what else was on the menu, there was always mashed potatoes -- quite a treat for this little Italian girl!
Dearest Rick and Jan, we're praying for a refuah sheimah -- a complete recovery -- for both your mothers...
