Mary Borrelli Passed Away

It is with the heaviest of hearts that I pass on the news that Mary (Rizzo) Borrelli passed away last night. Beloved mother of Don and Bill Borrelli, and sister to Carmella Emily (Rizzo) Tate, she will be missed by all of us who had the privilege of knowing her vibrant personality. She was nearly 96 years old and still lived independently in her own apartment in Palos Hills, just outside Chicago, Illinois. I was fortunate to speak to her just hours before she died. She explained to me that she had not been feeling well for a couple of weeks, and her son Donnie took her to the E.R. yesterday when she complained of trouble breathing and heart palpitations. The hospital took multiple tests and said she would be fine, but they would keep her overnight "for observation." At around 10pm or 11pm Don and his wife Lupe kissed her goodnight and said they would see her in the morning; she said she was in a hurry to get back home "to clean house!" An hour later the hospital called Don and told him to come back; she had no pulse. Apparently she went to sleep and while asleep her heart simply stopped.

I am so very, very sad, and miss her deeply, as does everyone who knew her and was loved by her. She was a beautiful driving force who did not bow to convention but insisted on her own independence, and she was a success story from the beginning. Her life was an inspiration, and though we expected it for some time, her death is a blow to the senses.
