Emily to undergo hip surgery

Mom (to me, Emily to others) went to an orthopedic surgeon today to investigate possible hip surgery. She walks with a cane now as most of you know and has been having quite a bit of trouble with mobility. After viewing her xrays, the doctor (or SawBones as Dad calls him) seemed surprised that she wasn't in a wheelchair. He advised she needs both hips replaced; she requested that the left hip be done first. She really liked the doc - partly because he's Italian, and partly because he's "cute." (Dad interjects, "I KNEW she would say that!") In any case, she needs to get a chest xray, blood work, etc. before they will actually schedule the surgery... so it may be late May before she actually undergoes the surgery itself. The doc told her to expect a 4 week recovery period; then Mom called one of his patients who told her it was a year recovery time... Mom is now vacillating on whether or not she wants it to be done, but at the end of the day she said she realizes that she can have pain with a hope of recovery, or have pain with NO hope of recovery... the choice is hers. Mom asked me to post this not on the family blog in the hope that her out of state/country children will telephone her. I think she's already heard from Robin, but is hoping to hear also from Sherry/Vernon and Tom/Jan. I understand Robin volunteered to be here during the expected 4 days Mom will be hospitalized -- THANK YOU ROBIN !! -- And of course David/Loni and Jimmy/I will be here for her as well. Anyway, we'll keep updates posted here as things progress.

I read that Emily's surgeon is Italian. Is it Longo? If so he is excellent. I also see that someone told her she would be a year in recovery. That is kind of true.....I was walking the next morning and could have walked the day of surgery but I was woozy from the stuff they were giving me. I had NO PAIN MEDS but regular tylenol. It is true that they say its a year to complete recovery, but she will be able to walk, do light things in the kitchen, ride in the car....drive after 6 weeks. I was cooking after I got home (I came home the 3rd night), of course I was on the walker, but I could hold to the cabinets and get around. I was on the walker 2 weeks and on a cane about 6 days. I kept forgetting where I left it...so figuered I didn't need it. I know everyone's recovery isn't the same, but she will be happy she did it. I have the latest in prosthetic hips....ceramic..... I imagine she will feel like doing the other one after just a few months and when the pain is gone, you really have a new lease on life. I had been in terrible pain for 2 years and just wouldn't do it and one day Larry said....enough, we have to do it. Dr. Longo and his PA (Scott) were like they were sent from God.....believe it! Just want to encourage Emily to not be afraid of doing it and pray that her recovery is as quickly as mine. LoraJean
