New Year News

My new year resolution OUGHT to be to keep this blog more up to date... But if I make such a resolution, it's sure to never work, so I'll save myself the guilt.

So, what's been happening at our end of the world? Quite a bit. As stated in my November 12 post, Tom and Jan came to Arizona to visit while Jimmy and I went to North Carolina and spent two weeks with son David. Tom had the bad fortune to be here during one of our rare rainstorms and of COURSE our roof leaked like a sieve! But at least he and Jan got to have a nice turkey dinner with June and Rickey Lynn and Lori et al over Thanksgiving. Meanwhile we were galavanting about the countryside, tramping down hiking trails along the Tar River and having a grand time. .. and oh yes, we got to watch David and his Air Force Bomb Squad unit blow up some stuff during a training session! I have a new respect for these guys who keep us safe from things that go Ka-Boom.

On January 8th, we went to see Cosi Fan Tutti, performed by the Arizona Opera at the Orpheum Theater. We invited a couple of good friends (Ernie and Sally) to join us, and they treated us to a fabulous Oso Bucco dinner at the North Restaurant prior to the performance. Loni (aka The Opera Angel) made sure we got fabulous seats. The theater has been completely restored, and while it didn't afford the best venue for the opera (the stage was too small to do much in the way of a set), just sitting in the Orpheum was an experience. Looking at all the elegant architecture made us feel like we were transported back in time 100 years. And in spite of the spartan set, the Opera Company did a fabulous job, and some of the arias were awe-inspiring. No wonder some of these people insure their throats!

Time marches on. Later this month Rickey Lynn is going to be Bat Mitzvah. I was honored that she invited me to participate, but the date of her celebration coincides with the same day as my birthday, and Jimmy had months ago promised to take me out of town for my birthday. I'll be Officially middle-aged, 55. Don't feel it, though. So a couple of weeks ago when Tom called and invited us to visit Colorado for my birthday, Jimmy and I willingly accepted. We had been planning on going to California, but San Diego couldn't provide a double-date with my bro and sister-in-law! So next week we'll pile the dog and the suitcases into the truck, buy some snow chains and Off We Go Into The Wild Blue Yonder... Ciao !

Wonderful and dear people are very rare in this life. Susan is one of them, and she is dearly loved. I will miss her at my Bat Mitzvah, but I will be happy knowing that she and Janice are celebrating their 29th birthdays together again. Next year when she has her 29th birthday, perhaps we can all share in celebrating it.
